MODERATORS NOTE: lagniappe Volume I, Issue 1
Dear subscribers:
You may recall a post that I sent out on Dec. 21st
letting you know about a new publication that would
support the Online Ads Discussion List. Well, it
officially launched yesterday. This is the first
newsletter associated with AdBanter.com. This is the
only time that you will receive this newsletter unless
you directly subscribe to it. I think you will find it
and the new site very interesting.

++++++ Editor's Cut: The Genesis of lagniappe ++++++
by Ryan Monceaux, Editor In Chief
So you have opened up your Inbox and here's another
newsletter. What else is knew? It seems every week we
get another one of these sent to us, some we wanted and
some that just appear (like we did, right?). Well don't
worry, this is the only time lagniappe (pronounced
lawn-YAP) will come to you without you subscribing.
Since we're partnered with the Online Ads Discussion
List, we're giving you a sneak peak at our brand
spanking new Web site entitled AdBanter.com. AdBanter
is geared directly towards Online Advertising,
Marketing and Publicity professionals just like
yourself.
The site was originally supposed to just be an
accompaniment to Online Ads, but it was decided (before
I was brought on board) that the site could do much
more. Tenagra wanted to build a publication that would
garner the same respect as the Online Ads List has. And
so that has become AdBanter's mission: work as
diligently as possible to deliver the same strong
content that has made Online Ads the industry's
standard in terms of discussion lists.
In our inaugural issue, AdBanter features our monthly
contribution by Jim Sterne, an exclusive report on Web
sites stealing banner ads, the best from the Online Ads
List and much more. We will maintain an extensive list
of conferences and upcoming events in the industry as
well covering more conferences than anyone with our
vast freelancers network (if you would like info on
freelance writing for AdBanter, email me at
ryan_at_adbanter.com) as well as our editorial staff.
If there is ever anything you would like to see
AdBanter or lagniappe do better, feel free to drop us a
line. I am neurotic about returning emails, even for
the most mundane questions.
And on a final note: Many people wonder where the word
"lagniappe" comes from (many in my own office, too.
They've all just shaken their heads and laughed at me),
so I thought I would share the story of the word and
it's meaning.
If you look at my last name, you can tell that I'm
probably not from your "neck o' the woods." I grew up
in south Louisiana and have always had the Cajun
culture in my blood. The word lagniappe is living proof
of that.
The word came into the rich Creole dialect mixture of
New Orleans and there acquired a French spelling. It is
still used chiefly in southern Louisiana to denote a
little bonus that a friendly shopkeeper might add to a
purchase. By extension, it may mean "a little something
extra or unexpected gift or benefit." Since this
newsletter is intended to be "a little something extra"
for the Online Advertising profession, it was only
fitting that we name it just that.
Thanks and have a prosperous 2000.

by Jim Sterne

different managing a brand online? You bet your

amuse regarding Web branding for several months in a

+ The Big News: Is Your Banner Running on Sex Sites? +
by Jon Huntress
It's beginning to happen more and more across the
industry, almost to the point where it is becoming a
full-fledged problem. What is it? Banner ads being
served to Web sites where they are not supposed to be.
Many of these sites are sexually-oriented sites, and
are ripping off legitimate ad campaigns for a multitude
of reasons. In this AdBanter.com special, contributing
editor Jon Huntress examines who is stealing banners,
what the industry is doing to fight back and what you
should know before this happens to you.

++ Panel Discussion: Jill Ellsworth and Jim Huertas ++
QUESTION: Can you build an online presence without
resorting to offline advertising? Dr. Jill Ellsworth,
Senior Partner with Oak Ridge Research: Marketing
anything -- an online presence included -- is likely to
be most successful with a carefully planned, targeted
campaign. You've obviously got to go to where your
potential audience is now. If you think that your
entire audience is online now, and that you can attract
enough of them via the Internet, the Internet may be
the most economical approach.
Mr. Jim Huertas, President and CEO of Crytech: When
asked to respond to whether you can build an online
presence without resorting to offline advertising, I
have to say yes, but with conditions. The main reason
is that if you are building an online presence your
primary target audience is those already online.
Therefore, online advertising will reach more potential
viewers than offline advertising. The Internet is a
great tool, but you have to have access to use it (or
be used by it).
