Check out http://www.bellacoola.com/.

Their technology works by including within the article
a small piece of info, typically a 1x1 gif image, that
is served from your site. By tracking how often that
image is loaded, you can tell how often the article is
viewed. They're probably doing something slicker than
that, but that's the premise.
