Unfortunately I do not know of any specific survey
results about how often b2b companies search engines
but I do know that there is a growing trend concerning
online b2b communities. Within these communities are a
variety of features including search capabilities. The
search findings are highly targeted and deal strictly
within the realm of that particular community's
interests.
The most obvious example that comes to mind are the
vertical trade communities found within the
VerticalNet.com site. These communities which are
industry specific and vertically oriented have been
dubbed vortals. An employee, working within the
machine tools industry for example, may find the
search capabilities within a relevant vortal to be
helpful in searching for product suppliers if for no
other reason than to increase the size of their
supplier list. I see the vortal listing as being much
more useful for b2b so long as these vortals continue
to grow and establish themselves like the search
engines of the world.
