In response to Brad Phillips mail re: Usability
testing...

Yes! My company usability-tests our website before we
launch any major changes, with great success. We have
found that users will do things you NEVER expect! We
use a firm in Atlanta called Usability Labs. They
recruit participants based on our criteria, then we
give them tasks and observe, videotape, and note their
actions. For example: we found that it took an
average of 45 MINUTES to complete our site's
registration - it's now down to 5.

You can easily set up your own lab with a videocamera
and record what the user does, or create a focus group.
We pay our participants, so they are happy to help! If
you would like more information about our usability
procedures, contact me directly.

Also, Jakob Nielsen writes great articles and books
about web usability - I suggest a copy of 'Designing
Web Usability: The Practice of Simplicity'.

Subject: Acceptable Click Thru Rate

My company is considering banner advertising with one
of the big networks. I'm seriously considering Double
Click. Are they as good as they claim to be? Can anyone
please tell me what click-thru rate I should expect
initially? After a month's worth of banners on their
network, I plan to limit the banners to the best
performing sites. What click-thru rate should I expect
then? Assume my company's services have a broad range
of appeal. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Dennis Ball
