Shawn Petriw asked for hard numbers on monitor sizes and
resolutions. Havah Hope had previously stated the opinion
that the most common configuration was 12" monitor at
640x480...
A great resource for answering questions like this is GVU's
WWW User Surveys.
The percentage distribution of monitor sizes is reported at:
http://www.gvu.gatech.edu/user_surveys/survey-1998-10/graphs
/technology/q127.htm
(41% are using 17" or bigger; only 4.7% are using 12" or
smaller)
and the distribution of screen resolutions is reported at:
http://www.gvu.gatech.edu/user_surveys/survey-1998-10/graphs
/technology/q128.htm
( only 11.6% using 640x480; 30.7% using 800x600; 20.7% using
1024x768)
These numbers were gathered in October 1998, so it's
probably even further skewed towards the high end by now.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
.../j
