TO WHICH ERIC DUBIN RESPONDED:
> You are correct. It's no longer true. [ ... ]
Actually, you need to make a distinction here. She
asserts three points, after all:
a) The most common monitor size and resolution is not
as great as it usually is for the folks that are
"into the Internet".
b) The most common size is a 12" monitor set to 640 X
480
c) Webpages intended for general use should be designed
with the most common size and resolution in mind.
Of those, only b is no longer true. While I have found
the references given in the responses to be very
useful, let's not lose sight of what she was actually
talking about. The thrust of what she was saying is
still true even though the march of time and technology
has brought the average up to the unimpressive level of
15" at 600x800. The reason is obvious: the march of
time and technology has also moved more and more of the
"monitor elite" into the 17-and-better range (tho the
advent of LCD monitors is bound to confuse that nice
tube progression a bit).
On the plus side, tho, she can finally let the techs in
her office upgrade her to the new most common
size/resolution. ;-)
