Which links deliver?

I want to track which links that point to my site are
delivering the best results. I had a how-to article
that gave me instructions on how to code a link that
will make it unique and easily identifiable on the
server logs. Unfortunately the file was lost during a
bout with a nasty virus. Can anyone stir me in the
right direction to find this information? Feb 7 2000
