It was a good discussion about Domain registration
alternatives. Many new registrars were mentioned here.
However, it seems the full list of new registrars was
not. Here is the direct URL to ICANN web site were ALL
new registrars, both operating already and pending,
are listed:

It's a good idea to check this list before register a
domain with some registrar.
We are currently using Internet Domain Registrars at
http://www.registrars.com/ . It's not a lowest possible
price but normal reliable service. You may also check
availability of domain names worldwide, including
national ones, with the Domain Name Checker at
http://www.web-space-station.com/dnc/ and immediately
register one if you need .com, .org or .net
Also one correction on WHOIS.

It's not correct. NSI does not own WHOIS. Every
registrar maintains own WHOIS server. However, NSI
maintains so-called Shared Domain Registry. It's
database where all domain names with who is Registrar
and some other information are contained. To get WHOIS
information about a particular domain name it's
necessary to query correspondent WHOIS server. See, for
example, http://www.betterwhois.com/ for details and
integrated WHOIS service.
