Flashy Websites

With the recent discussion about website design, we
know that website visitors can become frustrated with a
slow encumbered website and click away, never to
return...

But what about website visitors who become bored with a
fast but plain website? Obviously there should be a
balance between the two.

I'm helping a webhosting company (CWIhosting.com) to
work on their website. Their current opening page
(http://www.cwihosting.com) is full of images, taking
up a total of almost 100k! I suggested perhaps a
simpler design (http://www.aaanime.net/cwi/), but the
CEO informed me that they used to have a simple
website, but when they made it more flashy, sales
increased by 25%.

What does everyone think, and what kind of "flashy"
things do you put on your websites that make it look
better without causing a significant slowdown? Buttons
that change color on mouseover? Colored table cells on
the sidebar?
