I think the frustration you're expressing, Boris, is a
common one on the Web. You could spend a large amount
of time simply researching ways of trying to get
noticed and not get around to implement any of them
(been there, done that :-).
We share many of your characteristics -- we're based in
New Zealand (which means we're often not taken
seriously except in yachting... :-), and have
developed an excellent software product for publishing
and managing online periodicals which does twice as
much and costs half as much as anything else (actually
it's closer to ten times, but you may think that's
just marketing speak :-)
I've been working on how you can produce good search
terms or encourage site visits when the most relevant
sort of tag is something like "Web publishing"!! And
found many of the same results you have...*sigh*
We've found so far that the most effective approach is
to develop as many personal contacts and networks of
contacts as you can and participate in forums like
this. It's a hard slog, but it's the human touch that
is remembered. Trade shows have been a help in
boosting profile -- it's the smaller shows that are
better than the huge marts.
One of the ways we've found to boost site visitors is
to give something away. We developed a useful utility
which includes our site URL and it brings about 6,000
visitors monthly to our site -- small numbers to some,
but they help. (It's available as sponsorware for
other sites; if you want to take a look at it, see:
http://TurboPress.com/tbnote.htm).
Good luck (and I'll be in contact off list -- see the
direct personal approach can help! :-)
