Matt,
Newsgroup advertising can be very tricky business. The
Newsgroups has been a target for *spamming* for some
time now. However, if you can find a Newsgroup in your
*niche* or target market then you should take advantage
of the opportunity.
Here's a stategy that could work in this area.
Step 1
=====
You must be (or become) an expert in the *niche* market
that this Newsgroup targets. Expert meaning that you
have experience with the product or service that this
market offers. I not, then, you should do your
homework and become an expert. It's really simple to
do. You just have to spend time to research the market
and read everything that you can get your hands on and
take notes. The Internet is an *Open Book* to
information gathering, so use it.
Step 2
=====
Next, you should write at least 3 or 4 articles on the
subject matter. These should be informative, helpful
articles that would interest anyone in this *niche*
market. Put these article on a web page or insert them
into an autoresponder for quick retrieval.
Step 3
=====
Next, spend a little time each day just reading the
post in the Newsgroup. You are trying to get a feel
for the *favor* of the group. Take notes and look for
opportunities that you can *jump in* and use the
information that you gathered during your research.
After a few days of studying the group, start
participating by posting your own advice, tips and
answers to the groups questions.
Most Newsgroups will allow a small *sig file* at the
end of your post. Use this to insert a one-line
headline plus a link to your web page article or
autoresponder. Maybe something like this:

Reveals How [Insert your link here]
Stick with it. It you contribute good advice to he
group, you could become an expert for the group. If it
is a large group, then you could drive a ton of
traffic to your site and make a few extra dollars in
the process.
Hope this helps.
