Vital. I recently looked at contacting Web consultants
in LA and Boston -- about 70% of the Web sites I came
across for the LA people required Flash and the
majority of them did not have an alternate non-Flash
version. That said to me that these consultants did
not care about their market, merely about looking
"flashy" and hence did not meet my professional
requirements.

Interestingly enough, the proportion of Flash-based
sites for Boston companies was far lower. I'm not sure
if this reflects a sociological difference (are they
more backward or more professional or less glitzy on
the East Coast? :-), but the distinction was
significant.

Sure it's nice to have the latest toy, but there's no
way I'd do business with a company that demands I have
to play along (or have to have a specific browser or a
specific screen size or...).

Cheers,
Vicki Hyde
