Great Topic!

Why not do both? Charge a smaller monthly subscription
fee in addition to selling advertising.

Things to consider:

1. Who will sell your advertising? Do you have enough
traffic for a large network (ie: doubleclick, real
media etc...) to accept your website as a client? If
you do not have the traffic, do you have a budget set
aside for an inhouse sales person?

2. Create a free area on your website in addition to
your paid services. If the information or technology is
unique it can be a very "sticky" feature and will
increase your traffic.
