Hi Will,
I currently run a site which also functions as an
add-on to a popular national radio program. I've found
the best way to keep people coming to the site is to
offer info they want, but can't necessarily get through
on-air content (yes, you'll have to do some promo
spots...). Several examples of opt-in email lists
you could use include entertainment stuff (including
juicy gossip), local news spotlights, or perhaps even a
condensed version of your station's weekly viewing
schedule.

I don't know about studies, but I can tell you that
once my site started receiving on-air promo, the site
traffic jumped in a BIG way. Visitors crave to know
more about the personalities they spend their time
with. One of the busiest pages is a simple poll for
listeners to vote on a "Hot 5" countdown every day, so
maybe this could give you some ideas.
Hope this helps!
