I wouldn't purchase banner ad software since I don't
have many clients who purchase advertising from me, but
since you asked:
Some sites, such as mine, have all of their pages
written in ASP (VBScript, JScript and sometimes perl)
or PHP3 (i.e. dynamically generated scripting).
Examples include www.ispcheck.com,
www.highwayinterchange.com, and my
www.girlsofanime.com. The latter is my site and I have
homebrewn banner ad code integrated into the scripting.
Thus, it is advantageous if your banner software can be
integrated into server side scripting, because then you
can generate HTML code directly into the page (allowing
things like ALT tags and pulldown menus), rather than
either not having the HTML capability or relying on
client-side JavaScript (which is not guaranteed to
work, e.g. some people turn off Javascript to avoid
geocities banners).

If I was looking for banner software, I would be
looking for software that runs on my server (UNIX).
Something fast and simple, that does not require an SQL
database (not all webhosts give SQL, after all, and
banner ad databases are simple enough to use
flatfiles).
Hope this is useful,
