Using a wire service will get your release into a lot
of searchable databases, which can help you show up in
headline services, portals, etc. So it is a good thing
(worth the price, you need to decide). It is DEFINITELY
a good idea to also get to know the key editors in your
market and build a personal relationshiop with them.
But do your homework -- find out who covers what kinds
of things at the publications that are most important
to you, and send them useful things. Don't just
carpet-bomb the publication with releases -- you'll get
pigeonholed as clueless if you do, and it won't help
you get good coverage....
As far as which service to use -- I've known PR people
who have used PR Newswire and Business Wire and who
have had good things to say about both. No personal
experience to share though.
