Chris,
There's no hard fast number on this. The crucial factor
is WHO you are targeting and WHAT you are
selling/giving...that's a key factor.
Also HOW you advertise makes a big difference. At a
recent Garage.com BootCamp

an Ogilvy branding expert was slaming computer.com's
adv - one didn't know what the "call to action" was
and other problems!!!!!
However, if you target your advertising very, very well
and ensure your ad has a clear message and closing
call to action....you should do well.
There's also the aspect of WHERE you
advertise...magazines are good for brand awareness.
But I think Radio ad and email are better for a direct
reply.
If you are selling sneakers, get a mention in the
"Sneakers Today" newsletter or something...
