I agree that flash is rather ubiquitous, but to say
Flash "is compatible with 98% of today's browsers" is a
bit of an exaggeration. At Macromedia's website it
says:
In March 2000, NPD Research, the parent company of
MediaMetrix, conducted a study to determine what
percentage of Web browsers have Flash preinstalled. The
results show that 89.9% of Web users can experience
Flash content without having to download and install a
player.
My $.02 - Rich media banners are more dangerous in
that it is easier for them to disrupt the user's
experience. On the other hand, if well done, a rich
media banner can potentially load quicker than a
standard banner (i.e. through streaming the load of the
banner).
