Stacy, I'd like to suggest an alternative idea for
gathering content for your "vertical portal". Are
there content experts within your client's vertical
niche that you could work with? For example, we our
site is a vertical portal for the ag. industry. We get
content from a number of sources:
1) A freelance journalist well-known in the industry
2) News releases and articles from agri-businesses that
are affiliated with our site
3) Articles written by our own internal staff (experts in
the ag. industry)
Granted, this may take a little more effort and
co-ordination than a syndicated news source. But there
are advantages, the most important being that our site
has exclusive content that our audience can't get
anywhere else. This is an important factor that
differentiates our site from our "competitors".
You may even get some content without paying for it;
some potential content providers may be looking to
exchange their expertise for exposure on your portal
site.
Or, a third alternative could a combination of
syndicated and custom content....just food for thought.
Cheers,
Richard Kies
