Re: Internet Keywords, RealNames

The REAL scoop on RealNames

While RealNames may not be for everyone, they do work
well IF you know how to use them properly -- and most
people DON'T use them properly.

The trick is to register a realname that contains your
important keywords in the realname TITLE.

For example, visit altavista and do a search for
"register website"

http://www.altavista.com/cgi-bin/query?pg=q&sc=on&hl=on&act=2006&par=0&q=register+website&search.x=33&search.y=9&kl=XX&stype=stext

then click on the realnames link:

http://www.altavista.com/cgi-bin/query?rnsp=0&realname=register+website+

and you will see (in the #1 position, he brags):

SelfPromotion.com - Register or add the URL of your
website to major search engines and indexes RN
Automatically add your URL to all the major indexes. A
share-service. If you like the site, pay what YOU
think it's worth!

You will also see an example of how not to do it.

website register RN
Registration Service www.website-register.com

Now if you do a search for "add url" and click on the
realnames link:

http://www.altavista.com/cgi-bin/query?rnsp=0&realname=add+url+

You'll also see my listing appear (#2 this time, but
that's OK) but website-register.com is nowhere to be
found.

The rule of thumb with RealNames seems to be that if
ANY of the words in your realname title matches the
query, you get listed. Your ranking depends on many
factors, and RealNames doesn't say much about this.
My WILD GUESS is that it's a combination of how many
times words in the query match words in your title as
well as some sort of popularity weighting.

Here are my results with RealNames:

9/15/98 - 6/22/00 : 5547 Clickthroughs
5/23/00 - 6/22/00 : 294 Clickthroughs

At $100 a year, by 9/15/00 I'll have spent $200 to
generate about 6400 clickthroughs, cost per click of
0.03 cents!

If this is a bad deal, I need more bad deals please!

Best,
R
