Bob,
I'd like to invite you to take a look at the Informz
system (www.informz.com). I won't go through the whole
pitch, but I wanted to mention the personalization and
targeting aspect of email newsletters. Using Informz,
you can create and send a newsletter containing news
items from A-Z, but the subscriber will only receive
news items from the categories they have chosen. So
Subscriber 1 may get items A, C, F, and Z; Subscriber 2
gets only item Q; etc. One mailing, but the messages
are completely personalized based on subscriber
interest and/or demographics. And if you are including
advertisements, you can also target these based on
interest and demographics - again, one mailing but
different advertisements to the individual subscribers.
