Advertiser-supported business model

I'm developing a business plan for a site that will be
primarily supported by advertising revenues. The site
will provide compelling, original content for a highly
targeted audience. This won't be a megasite, by any
means, but the numbers look good.

I've heard that investors, as a general rule, won't
invest in advertiser-supported sites. They are
influenced perhaps by those large, well-publicized,
heavily funded sites that never seem to make any
money.

However, I have a feeling that well-run small to
medium-sized sites can -- and do -- survive very well
on advertising revenues.

In anticipation of investor objections, I'm looking for
solid statistics, studies or research showing that the
advertiser-supported business model can be financially
viable.

Can anyone on the list point me toward such
information?
