Peter,
I don't have any exact number, but it makes sense from
our experience that you would get more traffic from
seeding the web with links rather than the search
engines. During a recent campaign, we were able to
drive 10,000 visitors to our client's web site in about
72 hours through links -- you'll wait longer than that
for the listing to even get on some search engines.
Additionally with search engines, you need to be very
proactive in maintaining your position. This requires
monthly grunt work that you may not have the resources
to do.
Even though the subject of your site attracts a general
population, people are going to be on the web looking
for specific information. I think if you continue to
find where that audience already is and establish
links, you'll continue to be succesful in increasing
your traffic.
