Best form of email marketing

Hi,

I'm a Belgian student at the Free University of
Brussels. I'm doing some research about email
marketing and I was wondering what is the best way to
advertise in a newsletter: with a banner ad, a text
only message or with a button?

Does anyone know which of these three gives the best
results? Does anybody know where I can find a study or
something like that on this subject?
