Banner size vs. screen size

Here's a quick observation that might help explain the
reduced effectiveness of banners. I was using a
friend's computer, with the screen set at 640 pixels.
I'm used to 800 pixels at my home office, and 1024
pixels at work.

The first thing I noticed while surfing the web at 640
pixels was how huge the banners were. I did some quick
calculations:

At 640 resolution, a 468-pixel banner takes up just
over 73% of the screen. At 800, 468 pixels is only
58.5%. And at 1024, 468 pixels is about 45%.

Could increasing the banner size / screen size ratio be
a way to improve banner effectiveness?
