Anne,

We feel getting coverage for your site from both the
traditional outlets and online media is essential for
effectively reaching your site's audience. A media
story can establish a credibility with your audience
that will drive traffic, attract VC, or present future
opportunities for further media coverage.

If you target the media outlets that cover your
industry, a site launch is a good time to send a press
release to the media. If you can come up with a news
angle to pitch your site launch to the media, then
maybe you can broaden the coverage. But it's better to
start with some small press coverage (maybe even local)
and then build on that rather than trying to make too
big a splash and get no response. Good Luck!
