A few days back someone had asked about using
WebPosition software. I use it for my clients with
much success. The reporting feature is the most
valuable to me, as it saves a lot of (wo)man hours. It
also has a good page critic (are your web pages set up
for each particular search engine?) and simple webpage
tracking.

Goto.com is a good source for researching the
popularity of keywords and phrases, and also helpful to
see what combinations of keywords are effective. And
it's Free! The URL can be hard to find if you don't
know where to look, so try this:
http://www.goto.com/d/about/advertisers/othertools.jhtm
l. Also, I just wrote about this in my ezine if you
want more info.

Of course Vladimir is right about meta tags. They have
to be very targeted, and only then will you get the
traffic that will turn into action on your site.
Researching your keywords is "key" to getting this
targeted traffic. However, keep in mind that not all
engines refer to meta tags for indexing. There a lot
of other factors involved, which are too numerous to
list here.

Just my .02.
