Re: domain name list

Although I've enjoyed reading the messages of a
marketer of an email management program attempt to
dissuade the marketplace about the need for an possible
product in his suite, I think we as advertisers and
marketers need to step outside the trees and look at
the forest.

Opt-in lists and newsletters are effective for us now
because the "rabid anti-spam" culture has spawned an
expectation in users of the value of messages in his or
her inbox. If that expectation is diminished or
eliminated, users will pursue similar tactics in
viewing email offering messages that they currently
pursue with banner advertising.

After that happens, we can all discuss how to
resuscitate opt-ins and newsletters as we are
discussing doing with banners. Or we can work within
the anti-spam culture, nourish that expectation and use
it to our advantage.

Ignoring the completely valid ethical arguments against
spam, perhaps we can follow Aristotle's statement that
"altruism is enlightened self-interest." In that light,
of all the reasons that spam is bad, perhaps the most
compelling is that the anti-spam culture works for us
as marketers and that our job will be much harder if
Brad's arguments prevail.
