Opt-in surveys and demographics

Does anyone know how opt-in survey results skew the
demographics? For instance, are more or less CEO's
likely to fill out an opt in survey then say Sales
Exec's or IT people? Older or Younger etc? How might
placement of the survey affect these results? I guess
what I am asking is this: Do people that self identify
tend to gravitate toward any specific identifiable
groups? Or is it a random - therefore even-
distribution?

Any stats and/or theories are greatly appreciated.
