Ramon,
Re: Fly-over Land-- There was an article in the
Thursday, 23 August Wall Street Journal about an
ENORMOUS publishing empire, based in and catering
entirely to the interests of people in the farm belt...
publicised entirely by word of mouth and direct mail,
and running dozens of titles with huge circulations
(i.e. millions of readers, HUGELY profitable, and, to
my horror carrying no ads)... and all this happens off
the radar of people on the coasts. If I had access to
the WSJ online, I'd post an excerpt from the piece...
can anyone get it?
I mention this mostly as a sign of just how
off-the-radar the culture of fly-over-land is for most
of us on the coast. We may sneer at it or even ignore
it, but there's huge markets there, seeming mostly
untapped.
If the Wal-Marts of this world eventually blow the rest
of the online business world off the map, it'll be
because they have an ongoing relationship with fly-over
land, and know how to talk to those people.
One other thing: If you spend enough time doing things
like online gaming and chat, you discover that a fair
number of fly-over people are in fact on line... just
not as consumed by it as we are.
