We have had good and bad luck with keyword advertising.
Last year with Yahoo we were promoting Christmas
decorations with keywords and category specific
advertising. We had click throughs of as high as 10 to
12% with averages in the 5% category. We also used
DoubleClick and their new Sonar group which buys
keywords across a number of different search engines.
This advertising was for an insurance benefit product.
The numbers were less than thrilling with a half a
percent rate. The same ads ran on Yahoo, though, and
received a 1.5 to 2% click through rate. Hope this
