Epaminondas , your're a smart person to understand the
value of content, even for an e-commerce Web site.
Content is what can make a browser into a buyer.

There are several routes you can go to get content:

a - Check out ScreamingMedia.com or iSyndicate.com. They
offer easy ways to get content for Web sites.
b - As you said, you can also rely on yourself. It
takes time, a lot of time (believe me, I know,
as I wrote 99.9% of the content at
    http://www.smallbiztechnology.com )
c - However, you may also wish to retain a few
professional writers to give you x amount of
    articles per month.
d - In addition, possibly your wholesalers/distributors
can provide content to you for free.
e - Lastly, check out clickz.com and search for Andy
    Bourland's article about getting writers/content.

I hope this helps. Keep us updated
