I also used to think that, but no longer. Newspapers
are simply becoming "content providers." Realize that
every article they publish becomes a web page, their
entire site is pretty much on-topic for their local
community, and they have substantial muscle in their
local market which can be translated into local web
traffic. (Not very efficiently, but they have a lot of
muscle.)
I'm not saying that they're home free, but I wouldn't
mind being in their position. In my experience
newspapers are leaning very heavily on their surplus of
content but they are neglecting basic internet
marketing, such as link exchanges and search engine
optimization. If they don't fix that they won't be
around to correct the mistake. But if they make it,
and plan ahead, they'll be very well positioned when
the web merges with television.
