It's a real threat! Perhaps not today(although it is a
taking ad dollars away presently) but as the efficiency
of delivery and regional exposure increases and time
passes it will render most daily's into dire straits
unless they re-act now. only the niche print
publications will survive , "Playboy", "Field and
Stream, Mom's gardening etc. MAY retain their place,
but for daily newspapers it is something discussed in
every boardroom.
In Canada the Thompson family, largest publishing
concern in Canada has just sold a major portion of
their print publication interests BCE (Bell
Communications) and Sympatico an internet bandwidth
supplier and hosting service. (Also a Bell Company).
The intend on bringing content to the internet
including their Globe & Mail newspaper.
It's a mini Time Warner/AOL type endeavor. If that is
not indicative of the climate I do not know what is. It
may well be that the majors all have to find a way to
bring their newspapers and the internet into some sort
of parallel existence. I do believe they will and in
doing so perhaps preserve the print editions. I do fear
print editions not having that on-line presence will
suffer greatly. For reasons like the Classified ads,
but more importantly ad budgets are now to be split(in
the future) in more ways and thus those big
infrastructures that grew during the non-internet days
will become quite the hindrance to success or sustain
ability.
This of course is but our humble opinion, thoughts???
