dire prospects for newspaper advertising vis-a-vis
Internet potential,

I agree with Antonio and have read similar analyses. In
fact, I recall reading several months ago that major
publishers like Cox and Knight Ridder have concluded
this as well and have for at least two years now been
posturing themselves to gain a foothold in the online
classifieds arena - taking advantage of their brands to
counter pure Internet players' incursions in this area.
Classified ads sales are a big part of their newspaper
revenue and, having concluded that they might lose out
in this area by focusing solely on their print efforts,
they have formed strategies for transferring this
revenue potential to the Internet, simultaneously with
continuing their newspaper classifieds.
