Re: Newspapers are doomed?

Last I read, newspapers derived 60 percent of their
revenue from classifieds. In our market, the local New
York Times-owned daily newspaper requires a staff of
about 200 to produce their newspaper. The overhead is
tremendous. They publish about 2,000 classifieds in a
typical Sunday edition.

My little family business (http://ocala4sale.com) has
an online inventory of about 3,500 local classifieds
at any given time. My wife maintains the classifieds
in between making sales calls and feeding two small
boys.

In a rapidly growing part of Central Florida, the local
newspaper has lost about 10 percent in classified
volume this year. Meanwhile, our traffic has exploded.

Bottom Line: Local newspapers have much to fear from
the Internet. I would not want to be a newspaper
publisher right now.
