I have just, a little over a week ago, begun serving
125x125 button/banners on my pages for my own content.
It's taking longer for me to get things into place
because I'm involved in several projects, but the
initial response rates are not overwhelming. I
suspect the small button ads require a very
specialized graphic design with which I'm inexperience.
However, I have been promoting XML channels for a year,
and Netscape provides you with an 88x31 button ad that
says something like, "Add this page to MyNetscape".
It's tiny. Nonetheless, my XML content generates a
significant amount of traffic. It may be these
subscription buttons have done a good job.
I would be very interested in reading what anyone has
to say about design requirements for this kind of
promotion, as well as click-thru ratios to expect.
