Debra,

If you undertake to do the search engine optimization
yourself, you will understand the difficulty of getting
top level placement.

There are a lot of sites and tools available to help.
The one we use is Web Position Gold,

(We liked it well enough to become an affiliate.)

I have taught a seminar for several years on creating
search engine friendly Web sites which is very good for
the basics. We've put it on CD-ROM and use our Web site
to keep it updated. (The search engines are a moving
target.)
