A couple quick comments on link popularity. I've been
linking sites since 1994, and did the first linking
campaign for Amazon, Microsoft, Wine.com/VVin.
</pedigree :)>
1). A link that is pointing to your site is useless
from a link popularity search standpoint unless the
link is at the 3rd level or higher on the site where
the link exists. Otherwise, the engines don't even
know the link exists because the engines don't spider
deeper than that. While the 3rd level depth is not
universal, it's a fair statement to say that you need
those links to be the highest level possible to have
any great impact on popularity searches.
2). It is NEVER a good idea to submit someone elses
pages to an engine. This is becoming a new problem, as
people find a link to their site on a page and submit
that page to the engines "just to be sure" the engine
knows about it. How would you like to find out your
site has been banned from a search engine due to
hundreds of submissions being made by the sites you
linked to, none of them by you?
3). FFA (free for all) links pages are useless. I have
run a private searchengine and NEVER indexed them
becasue they are basically junk.
4). Link popularity is only one small reason why you
should build links to your site.
