It's not just the implementation that has to be taken
into consideration. Java is a very large application
that has to be loaded into memory. It doesn't really
matter whose java machine the surfer is using. The
Internet was created as a medium for the free
dispensation of information, not for managing
client-server networking applications.

Java is about as foreign as one can get with today's
Internet technology. That Intranets use the same
technology is a bit misleading. An Intranet covers a
much smaller scope in system services and client
stations. Even 10,000 stations on an Intranet are
easier to plan for than the Internet. On the Internet
you have to assume the worst, work with the lowest
common denominator. You have to do the same with an
Intranet, but at least there you are supposed to have
some control over what the LCD turns out to be.

You just don't roll out software that the network
cannot handle. And right now, the Internet cannot
handle Java. Not efficiently. It wasn't designed for
that.

The fact that many people WRONGLY choose Java for the
Internet doesn't make it a GOOD tool for the Internet.
It's a very lousy tool for the Internet, and is
probably one of the worst tools one could choose for
the Internet, if not THE worst. You might as well
hire muscular men to stand at your store's front door
and have them kick every visitor in the face. The
fast, quick people will duck under the bruisers' feet
and get in. The rest of the folks will just roll out
into the street, pick themselves up, and go on to find
a friendlier store with lower standards of admission.
