Re: WebAdverts alternative
Hi Melanie,
Michael brought up some important questions which I
just thought I should comment on...

This is a very important question. Probably one of the
biggest reasons my server still works with WebAdverts
under such heavy load is because I essentially have a
dedicated server (there are a few other small sites on
it). The server is a 450 MHz Celeron (overclocked)
with 256 MB RAM and a SCSI subsystem. Not a high end
server, but it gets the job done :)

> (bandwidth)?
This is also important. If the connection to the
server is bad, it's really going to slow things down!
> How much HTML code is on the pages?
My HTML code is pretty bulky, but all the graphics on
my site are tiny. If you have a lot of CSS &
JavaScript or other programs running, along with heavy
HTML code, you could really be bogging down your server
with each load of your page (since it also has to
execute 5 calls to WebAdverts, particularly if you are
using the same ads.pl file for each one).
> Is everything loaded into one huge table?
I'm doing this on my site, and it's definitely not a
good practice... I'm guilty there... This could slow
your load time since nothing will display until the
entire HTML file is downloaded.

I'm serving about 7 1/2 million ad impressions per
month (about 1/3 of that in page views), and it's
still going strong because of the way it's setup. I'm
curious Michael, are you serving a large number of
ads? Have you considered other ad serving programs?
If so, what options were you looking at? What have
other people switched to when they outgrew WebAdverts?
Take care,
