Hi Robert. Glad you asked this question. As I teach
in my seminars, your biggest enemy online (and the
biggest weapon for unscrupulous marketers) is
"misinformation." Check out http://www.cauce.org and
http://www.mailabuse.org for information about spam,
its definitions, pending legislation, etc. In short,
the message you got is a common one that marketers are
either putting on their messages to be deceiving, or
because they haven't done their research. In truth,
the cauce.org site references this bill saying:
The Murkowski-Torricelli Amendments to S. 1618
<http://www.cauce.org/legislation/s1618_hr3888.html> .
Status: Passed Senate, died in conference, (which means
the bill is not law, despite what spammer 'disclaimers'
say).
If you look in the "pending legislation" area of
cauce.org, you'll see what's currently going on with
spam. If you need to report someone who has put you on
a list without your permission, go to mailabuse.org and
follow directions there. Good luck, and feel free to
email or call with any questions.
