So, in plain English (if I may interpret for you on
behalf of our non-tehcnical fellow list members)
you're saying that a high-end system will benefit more
from a database-driven ad server than from a typical
Perl-based system.
The principle seems sound enough to me, especially if
the caching (keeping data resident in memory) is
configured well enough. The Perl programs do have to
be recompiled every time they are called to serve ads.
One of the things I noticed about the main program in
Webadverts is that it's pretty large (something like
2600 lines, IIRC).
So, I would guess the PRACTICAL cut-off point lies
somewhere between 4,000,000 and 10,000,000 page views
depending on number of impressions per page.
Different systems will handle the loads at their own
pace.
It will be a while before I get there, but I'm working
on it. I, at least, will keep your recommendation in
mind. :)
