Opt-in Email and Newspapers

I was hoping someone could share their experience with
opt-in campaigns targeted from newspapers to the
newspaper subscribers. Specifically, I was wondering
about these issues:

What sort of content is the most popular with email
recipients?

What sort of special promotions (contests, prizes,
etc.) work best to get and keep email subscribers?

What's the most effective way to promote the email
service to draw subscribers rapidly?

Any other lessons or experiences would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks.
