Re: Pop-up Windows Embedded in Banner Ads

This morning I felt a breath of fresh air from the list
when I read Keith's thoughtful comments. One of which
was:

KEITH LACY <keithl_at_vistatec.ie> WROTE:
> I think sometimes we get caught up in the tactics of

> matter) and sometimes don't see the wood for the trees.

I agree! I have done little in the way of traditional
advertising for my workshops and services and yet I
continue to get clients. I don't have thousands of
people clicking on ads to find me because I don't use
banner ads, pop ups, nor do I have any on any of my
sites. I am a writer, I offer a free newsletter to new
writers and a free forum for writing advice. I have
developed relationships with people all over the
net/world and my business is mainly from word of mouth
and satisfied clients. I didn't do this overnight.

My testimonials are not from friends (something an
astute web surfer soon catches onto) but from people
who have used my services and given freely of their
opinions of their experience with me.

My website probably offends all the traditional
standards for getting and holding customers, it has a
lot of graphics that are not really needed, it is not
laid out that great (but I am working on it) but I have
branded my services in a rather unique way and people
remember me. You won't see any banner ads on my site.

In all the posts on who has the best ad servers, or
'where can I buy more ads that people will click on' no
one is saying what the visitor is getting once he does
manage to find your site. All the ads in the world and
thousands of people clicking in mean nothing unless you
give people what they want. This is not always as easy
as getting them in there.

Unless you are offering people a quality service with a
USP communicated in such a way that your offerings
stand out from the millions of others selling what you
are selling, what is the point? You can get millions in
but is that going to entice them to buy anything?

Agree again! With all the marketing talent on this list
- where is all the creativity? Do you think a start
might be to stop putting so much time, energy and focus
on, 'how to generate click throughs and where can I buy
an ad to get people in here' to: 'What can I do to help
someone see that I have a great product or
service'....where does your client fit into your
marketing plan?? No one is talking about that.

> cut the bs and give it to them straight and even if

Bang on again! I always refer people to someone else if
there is something I feel they can do better than I can
or if I don't have time for their project.

What is everyone doing in the area of networking? I
realize that this is an ad list but I would like to
hear from people who DO have people that are buying and
not how to get them in but how did you get them to keep
coming back and how did you get them to purchase from
you?

Merry Christmas and all the best in 2001!
