John, I notice that your sig provides a one-click
subscription method, but no web site URL -- what about
your ad? Does it show a URL where an interested reader
can go to learn more?
I can't speak for everyone, but I know I've signed up
for a lot of newsletters after seeing them advertised
in other newsletters. But I have *never* signed up for
a newsletter without a quick check of the web site. Not
just to check the privacy policy (i.e. will you be
selling my email address to others) but mostly to see
if there are sample issues so I know if I want to spend
my time subscribing. FYI, the newsletters I recommend
to others are those with a web-based subscribe/unsub
page, web pages showing sample issues (or better yet,
complete archives), and a clear privacy policy.
Ezine advertising, like all advertising, is temptation
-- your ad should tempt me into going to your site,
then use the site to tempt me into signing up. I'm
probably not going to be tempted to use your
autoresponder, no matter how well written your 5-line
ad is, because I don't know you or your newsletter, and
thus don't trust you to use my email address wisely.
