A viable ad-based business model?
I have an idea for a business I would like to start.
The model it uses is the "provide a free service to
consumers, and show them advertisements in the form of
banner ads or other advertising mechanisms, and revenue
is generated by selling the ad space to businesses."
For example, www.dialpad.com, provides free consumer
telephone long distance, and shows people banner ads,
and charges businesses for ad space. Also check out,

I was thinking of taking it a step furthur and sell or
rent mailing lists sorted by categories (regional,
demographics, or specific interests), since my free
service to consumers, by its nature, would be gathering
this gold mine of information about each consumer.
What I want to know is, is this business model still
viable? Are their many businesses currently using this
model in its purest form, and are profitable, or are
most businesses incorporating other revenue generating
methods?
