Sales and color backgrounds

I wanted to know the effect of color backgrounds on
sales? If I design a store front or web page that has
a saturated red background verses a white or blue
background...What effect does this have on sales ..I
know that some basic design principals that apply to
e-commerce, but there are always exceptions.

What color is best to enhance or increase retail sales
through your website?

Can graphics work in the background...or would they
distract attention from the product display? or other
bells and whistles like streaming audio, flash,
streaming video...slideshows or PowerPoint ad demos?

What is the best basic design for a e-commerce site?
