Banner ads vs. sponsorships...one more time

I have read with great interest the last few months,
everyone's take on banner advertising, is it dead or
not, are sponsorships replacing banners, etc. My
question is this: Can anyone point me to a site (or
sites) where they are doing sponsorships successfully?
We are an association site (www.mgma.com) with a very
targeted audience and lots of content. Our home page
banner ads (buried at the bottom of the page) are
getting about a 1% click through. We believe that we
can provide better response to our sponsor/advertisers
through a sponsorship approach vs. a banner ad. We also
believe such an approach would be more lucrative. The
problem is that I can't identify any sites where this
is being done successfully. Rather than re-inventing
the wheel, I would like to find out how others have
made the change, what pitfalls to avoid, how
sponsorships have been handled on the website, what is
included in the sponsorship package and any other
advice that I could get? I appreciate any and all help
I can get. Thanks.
