I had a bad experience with linkexchange - we were
pretty happy with the service up to the pint when we
started noticing near adult banners on our site coming
from them, even though such banners were supposed to
be filtered. The problem was that the banners were
simply wrongly labeled, and despite several attempts
to notify linkexchange, the issue was not resolved (nor
did they respond to our complaint). That was the end
of it.

An alternative is to work directly with sites who want
to exchange impressions. You get 1:1 ratio and you
know what you are getting. With the current shortage
of paid ads, you should have no problem finding a
partner with relevant content.
